  1. Musical version of 1970s classic opens Saturday night at Show Palace

    Stage

HUDSON — Think of iconic movie scenes — Rhett Butler carrying Scarlett O'Hara up a broad staircase two steps at a time in Gone with the Wind, Rocky Balboa running up the stairs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Rocky, Bette Davis's Margo Channing standing on the staircase snarling, "Fasten …

Saturday Night Fever runs Feb. 25-April 2 at the Show Palace Dinner Theatre in Hudson. Pictured here are cast members, Heather Baird as Stephanie and Aaron Atkinson as Tony.
  2. Pauses aside, fine actors relate touching story in 'Stop Kiss'

    Stage

Don't get me wrong. The drama Stop Kiss has a fine script with a compelling story. The cast for the Richey Suncoast Theatre II production playing weekends through Feb. 26 is an honor roll of the theater's best actors, plus a newcomer who promises to be a great addition to that list.

  3. Calm of Debussy and Duruflé surrounds the storm of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2

    Stage

TAMPA — The latest offering by the Florida Orchestra begins with dewdrops and ends on a whisper. Between 20th century compositions by Claude Debussy and Maurice Duruflé bursts Ludwig van Beethoven, like an intruder yanking out all the drawers in the house and smashing everything that can be smashed.

Harpist Anna Kate Mackle led the orchestra in Debussy’s Danse sacr?e et danse profane.
  4. Take the Cross-Bay Ferry for free to these events in Tampa and St. Petersburg on Sunday

    Features

“Are you driving, or am I?"

You know the refrain. You and your partner swap it every time you head out on the weekend, to dinner, to a concert, to a parade. Someone has to bear the brunt of the steering wheel work.

    But what if you didn't?

    Stage

In times of great political uncertainty, maybe a dose of The Daily Show is just what Florida needs to stay sane. Thankfully, Trevor Noah is on his way.

  7. Review: 'The Aliens' at Stageworks an authentic challenge to what we're used to

    Stage

TAMPA — It's always nice to see conventions broken successfully. The Aliens, now running at Stageworks Theatre, features elements for which young playwright Annie Baker has been celebrated, notably its use of smart, realistic dialogue and lifelike situations with a minimum of theatrical gimmicks. It's worth …

In The Aliens, two 30-something friends, KJ (Derrick Phillips, left) and Jasper (Chris Jackson), unexpectedly bond with a teenager, Evan (Franco Colon).
  8. Inventive staging of Rossini's 'Cinderella' gets lots of laughs for Opera Tampa

    Stage

TAMPA — Two hundred years after its debut, the satirical edge in Cinderella still feels fresh. Gioachino Rossini's opera throws out the magic, including the glass slipper and the fairy godmother, and turns romance into a bullied stepchild. A widower and his two daughters hit on all of the deadly sins, with …

The cast of Opera Tampa’s production of Gioachino Rossini’s comic opera, Cinderella, features, from left, Johanna Fincher as Clorinda, Emily Righter as Angelina and Robyn Rocklein as Tisbe.

You know, I almost regret having to give the comedy Over the River and Through the Woods a rave review.

From left, portraying the loving grandparents of the main character, are: Ernie Rowland as Frank, Gary Kopitzke as Nunzio, Betsy Glasson as Aida and Barbara Santoro as Emma.
