Things To Do

These critical darling films are now streaming in September

RECOMMENDED READING

It's easy to get caught up in the blockbusters, the flashiest titles with the biggest stars.

But for our Fall Movie Preview this year, critic Steve Persall took a different tack. He chose to focus on movies he thinks will be worthy of critical praise and awards when they grace your multiplex screen. Click here.

But you don't have to wait to class up your movie repertoire. Each month, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon welcome new titles, many of which have enjoyed the soft glow of awards glory over the years. Here are some September additions to your favorite streaming service to get you ready for fall movie season.

Disney-palooza

Before Disney creates its own streaming service in 2019, Netflix in particular is enjoying an influx of the Mouse. The latest available on streaming have swept up critical points for their soundtracks. Go the Distance from Hercules and My Funny Friend and Me from The Emperor's New Groove were nominated for Best Original Song. Mulan's composer was nominated for Best Original Music Score. Pocahontas takes the cake, though, with Colors of the Wind winning the Oscar for Best Original Song. Hercules and Mulan are available now on Netflix. The Emperor's New Grove is available now on Hulu. Pocahontas is available Sept. 19 on Netflix.

Amores Perros (2000)

The Mexican film linking three stories through one car accident is part of a trilogy with 21 Grams and Babel. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It lost both to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Available now Netflix.

The Squid and the Whale (2005)

This lauded arty tale of two boys going through their parents' (Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney) divorce was written and directed by Noah Baumbach, who got an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The movie was mostly shot using a handheld camera. Available now on Netflix.

Pulp Fiction (1995)

Just in case you don't have your DVD tucked neatly beside your giant Uma Thurman poster, you're in luck. This film was not only loved by everyone at your college coffeehouse, the legendary John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson flick scored a Best Original Screenplay Oscar win for Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary. Available now on Netflix.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Here's your bar trivia, and just in time for the Halloween season. Strange things are afoot when two backpackers get attacked by a werewolf in England. Awards, you're thinking? That's right. It picked up an Academy Award win for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Available now on Amazon.
