MLB site: USF’s Shane McClanahan the No. 5 overall draft prospect

If the latest significant Major League Baseball draft projection is accurate — or even fairly accurate — Bulls redshirt sophomore LHP Shane McClanahan will become the highest draftee in program history.

McClanahan is No. 5 on MLBPipeline.com's latest list of the top 50 draft prospects. A 6-foot-1 power pitcher from Cape Coral, he's four spots behind Florida RHP Brady Singer, who helped lead the Gators to a national title in June.

McClanahan, who attracted a throng of scouts to USF Baseball Stadium during the fall season, was sidelined by Tommy John surgery his freshman year, then went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA last season. His 12.32 strikeouts per nine innings (104 total) ranked eighth nationally.

His batting average-against was .181, best in the American Athletic Conference.

The MLBPipeline.com assessment says in part: McClanahan has cleaned up his delivery and arm action somewhat since returning (from surgery), though some see some Chris Sale in his mechanics. There's plenty of pure stuff to be excited about, starting with a 92-97 mph fastball that he maintains deep into starts.

Former Bulls C Scott Hemond, taken by the A's with the 14th overall pick in 1986, remains the highest-drafted USF player ever.
